@thomcarspotter in NC, you are initially issued a standard plate which follows an ABC-1234 format. Once you have your license plate, for an extra charge you can customize it either on the default design or choose from the state's 100+ specialty design plates (such as Blue Ridge Parkway, Friends of the Smokies, Nascar Hall of Fame, etc). Once it is printed, the state mails your custom plate to you to replace your initial plate with.
